“I Always Get My Man”

“I Always Get My Man”

My Name Sharon wasn’t picked by my parents because it had a Hebrew origin, though the name does. I was named after a street in Winchester Square, Springfield, Massachusetts when a girl popped out instead of a boy and they didn’t have a girl name picked out.

My parents went for their traditional Sunday drive and my mother saw a street sign that read Sharon. The rest is history – mine.

Because it was in the middle of the African part of town didn’t matter one iota to either parent. Enough said?

My claim to fame: some people who become famous have a street named after them. I was born famous, because I was named after a street called Sharon. My thinking as a young girl was that I was born famous. Period.

Winchester Square is named after a New Haven, Connecticut Repeating Arms Company.

My father, Thomas J. Davies was a tool and process engineer for Savage Arms, originally called Stevens Arms in Chicopee, Massachusetts where his father James Frederick Davies was the shop foreman. Later in his career, my father’s career, he headed the department of Research and Development.

My father thought I’d be a good shot, he didn’t know at the time that I’d grow into shooting with words, not guns. Precise is what he meant. Careful is what he meant. Responsible is what he meant. Hit the target, in case anybody got lost in my words about myself.

I shoot with words, not guns. And I always “get my man”.
